A pioneering£45m tram system for Merseyside could be abandoned after it was rejected by Liverpool City Council, reported The Daily Post (1 June, p7).

Councillors decided that Liverpool Electric Trains Consortium had taken too long in providing detailed plans for the scheme, the application for which was lodged in 1998.

Officials said the group behind the plans had failed to provide sufficient details despite numerous requests from the authority. LETS had pleaded for more time, claiming their plans application was only an outline and more detail would follow.

But an official told the committee on Wednesday: 'Information provided has been wholly unsatisfactory.'
