Merthyr CBC is aiming to double its GCSE success rate and 'dramatically' improve other school exam results by the year 2000, reports The Western Mail (p7)

Parents will play a key role in the scheme, which will use family reading and homework guides.

At the GCSE level, Merthyr has one of the worst drop-out rates in Wales, with one in five pupils leaving school without a single GCSE pass.
