A move to save money at Merthyr CBC by giving the chief executive two roles has resulted in the appointment of a new treasurer, the Western Mail reported (July 2, p8).

Last year the council's former chief financial officer Garry Meredith was promoted to chief executive while retaining some of his financial responsibilities. But it has since emerged that the accountancy and audit manager has been given the job of treasurer with a salary of£45,690 a year.

The decision is recorded in the council minutes under the heading of transfer of the role of chief finance officer. The council has recently embarked on another exercise to cut other senior posts.
