Merton LBC's direct services operation has announced it has agreed an employment package with Taskmasters refuse collection service staff. Merton direct Services (MDS) is to take over the refuse collection contract on October 25. Taskmasters had run the refuse contract for 10 years before losing a tender under CCT.

MDS general manager said that after a series of meetings with Taskmasters staff and union representatives he had been able to agree an employment package with significant improvements on that currently offered by Taskmasters. He said: 'It is a good package with long term benefits to the staff including improved sick leave provisions and the opportunity to take up a pension.'

Merton has also announced changes in refuse collection arrangements. To save black sacks being torn people without rear garden access won't have to put their rubbish out until 9.30 am so avoiding the bags being torn and residents are also offered a free service for picking up bulky items including fridges and garden waste.

Also on October 25 MRS Environmental Services Ltd takes over the street cleaning contract.
