Barnsley MBC leader Steve Houghton has been appointed to the board of the Audit Commission,

His appointment will run from 2 May to 30 April 2009.

Local government minister Phil Woolas said:

'Councillor Houghton's experience will add significant value to the work of the commission.'

Mr Houghton has been leader of Barnsley MBC for the past nine years. He is also chair of the Barnsley Local Strategic Partnership and chair of the Local Government Association Urban Commission.

He was awarded the CBE for services to local government in 2004. In addition to his appointment to the board of the Audit Commission, Mr Houghton also holds a public appointment at the South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council.

Notes

The appointment was made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments' Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies. All appointments are made on merit. There is a requirement for appointees' political activity to be made public in accordance with the Nolan recommendations. Councillor Houghton has accordingly declared his activity on behalf of the Labour Party.

The appointment attracts a remuneration of£13,508 per year on the basis of a time commitment of three days per month.
