Home secretary Michael Howard has appointed one former and two serving councillors to the first body established to advise him on how to run the Metropolitan Police.

The appointments defied advice from the London Boroughs Association and the Association of London Authorities which put forward six other names (LGC, 3 February 1995).

Maurice Heaster, Conservative deputy leader of Wandsworth LBC, Margaret O'Neill, Labour member of Bexley LBC, and Reginald Watts, former Conservative member of Westminster City Council, were appointed by Mr Howard last week.
