Environment Secretary Michael Howard today announced new local government arrangements for Heathrow Airport.

From 1 April 1994 the airport will come wholly within the boundaries of the Hillingdon LBC, following recommendations made by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission. Currently Heathrow lies within three boroughs: Hillingdon, Hounslow LBC and Spelthorne BC.

Announcing his decision, Mr Howard said: 'After careful consideration I have decided to accept the recommendations of the Local Government Boundary Commission. I agree that the interests of Heathrow - the world's busiest international airport - are best served by uniting it within a single authority.

'However I do accept that the people from the boroughs of Hounslow and Spelthorne will maintain an interest in the future of Heathrow, and I support the commission's proposal that there should be a forum, including representatives from the three authorities, to discuss the future of the airport.'
