John Foster, the chief executive of Middlesbrough BC, has been awarded an£18,000-a-year salary increase, taking his annual pay to£100,002.

The Northern Echo (22 July, p1) reported that Mr Foster's award was presented to a meeting of the council's cabinet.

A council report says: 'John Foster personally has a high profile as a national figure in relation to the modernising agenda. One effect of this is his marketability in the local government field.'

For his part in accepting the increase, Mr Foster has guaranteed his intention to stay at his job until March 2002.
