Around 900 Middlesbrough BC Unison members have defected to the T&G since the branch's suspension in April.

Simon Clark, former secretary of the Unison branch and now secretary of the T&G branch for white-collar staff, said 11 out of 13 former Unison branch officers had joined the T&G and there were more than 920 members. Numbers were still growing four months after the new branchÕs launch.

Middlesbrough Unison was suspended in April following long-term internal difficulties. The branch has been dogged by disputes between former NUPE and NALGO members.

Mr Clark said he understood the branch had lost more than 2,000 members since the suspension. The union had 'very, very little credibility in Middlesbrough'.

Assistant branch secretary Teresa Higgins was elected to Unison's executive committee, but a speech critical of some union members came under fire from regional colleagues. A barrister's report on the troubles was to be discussed by the committee earlier this month. No decision on disciplinary action has yet been announced.
