Middlesbrough BC is exploring the possibility of using the Housing Act 1996 to prevent paedophiles living in council-owned accommodation.

The council has started consultation with various groups including the police, probation services and residents to gauge reaction to its proposal.

Middlesbrough is prepared to use any discretionary powers it has to disallow paedophiles from council tenancies if the consultation is successful.

It is one of many councils pressing for a national register of paedophiles to be set up.

A major part of the consultation will cover where sex offenders will be housed if councils such as Middlesbrough refuse them tenancies.

A council statement said: 'We believe the legislation in the Housing Act is unclear and in places contradictory.'
