Middlesbrough BC has supported Local Government Commission proposals which would give the council unitary status.

Leader of the Council, Michael Carr, said: 'The all purpose Middlesbrough authority will make it easier to deliver quality services - particularly key personal services such as housing and social services - in a co ordinated way.

'We will work closely with our neighbouring authorities to provide the services which have a strategic element. In terms of wealth creation and economic regeneration, the planned Tees Valley Development Company will allow us to market and promote our area far more effectively.'
