Veolia Environmental Services has signed a historic national recognition agreement with the Transport & General Workers Union. A significant public sector player with contracts with 28 local authorities, the move formalises its working relationship with the T&G across its municipal services operations. Currently, this agreement affects approximately 1,000 employees.

The signing demonstrates the company's commitment to consultation and collective bargaining and outlines a wide range of procedures fully approved by both sides. These include: union recognition (national forum for shop stewards to be held each year); health and safety; check-off facilities; union lay representatives; training and facilities for lay representatives and disciplinary and grievance procedures.

Veolia Environmental Services' chief executive for the UK and Northern Europe, Cyrille du Peloux, said: 'This agreement is designed to create a strong working partnership with the T&G that will operate at all levels and deliver joint benefits. Instead of being just a procedural agreement, we believe it will enhance industrial relations by enabling us to work together more closely on a day-to-day basis.'

Peter Allenson, T&G national secretary for public services, commented: 'This agreement will make a real difference to Veolia workers. This is an important company in a very challenging and important area of local government where the service provided does not just matter to local communities but globally, too. It is vital, then, that the workforce feel that they are supported by both their employer and their union. This agreement delivers this and we look forward to building membership as a result.'

Veolia Environmental Services, formerly known as Onyx and part of the Veolia Group, is one of the UK's leading waste management companies operating in all of the industry sectors. Veolia Environmental Services employs 71,000 people worldwide, servicing more than 50 million inhabitants across 34 countries.
