Plans to charge revellers£5 for a millennium event originally intended to be free have been reluctantly accepted by Sheffield City Council, says the Sheffield Star.

Event organiser Destination Sheffield says the charge will help pay for transport for up to 10,000 people.

The council has already contribued£110,000 to the event, and has made it clear it cannot underwrite it.

Martin Brelsford, chair of environment, development and leisure, said: 'We are extremely angry with Destination Sheffield for having failed to attract the sponsorship which they said they could bring in.

'As a result the people of Sheffield will have to pay.'
