Milton Keynes BC is to crack down on bedsits and shared homes in the new city, reports BBC Three Counties.

It is to introduce new regulations under the Housing Act 1996 to enforce strict standards in privately-owned housing in shared occupancy.

It is using the new Act to force landlords to meet new standards for fire precautions and a large range of other health and safety requirements.

Every owner will have to register property being used as bedsits or for multiple occupancy. Failure to meet the new regulations or failure to register could bring large fines. The council will also vet property managers to make sure they are fit and qualified for the job.

Milton Keynes has the largest proportion of young people in western Europe and the scheme could lead to a shortage of private rented accomodation, making the borough's housing problems even worse.
