Robert Atkins, the junior environment minister, has announced the launch of the Environmental Action Fund for 1995, to assist voluntary organisations carrying out environmental work.

Mr Atkins said: 'The fund is available to support the costs of voluntary organisations in England and we would particularly welcome applications from groups new to environmental work.

'For 1995 the EAF's priorities will be to support projects which:

1. get the message of sustainable development across to the general public; 2. encourage recycling and energy efficiency;

3. restore derelict areas and water courses; and

4. plant and maintain trees'.

Mr Atkins continued: 'Because we have limited funds at our disposal, we will give priority in 1995 to funding new projects.

'We will consider applications for strategic funding but it is unlikely that we will be able to offer much support.'

'The Civic Trust will manage all new projects commissioned in 1995. The department will continue to manage existing projects and strategic funding'.
