Sports minister Tony Banks promised an MP yesterday they should 'try to contrive a lottery application' to help fund a residential youth centre in West Sussex which the county council can no longer afford to maintain.

Howard Flight, Conservative MP for Arundel and South Downs, said Lodge Hill had provided residential courses for hundreds of thousands of students. Because of the county council's financial problems, it was being established on a charitable basis. He asked the minister some back-up support.

Mr Banks said he supported the work of the centre, which provided good outward bound courses.
