Wendy Alexander, the Scottish communities minister, will today deliver a robust rejection of what is expected to be an overwhelming vote against repeal of s28, reports The Scotsman (p1).

She will challenge the legitimacy of the ballot and question the tactics used by the 'keep the clause' campaigners, despite expectations that almost 1.5 million Scots have voted in the referendum, the result of which will be revealed today.

Ms Alexander will describe the ballot organised by Brian Souter, the Stagecoach boss, as a 'glorified opinion poll'. She said last night: 'It's about an opinion poll held to justify a misguided advertising campaign by Brian Souter. What we will see is a contrast between the legitimate democratic processes of the Scottish parliament and keep the clause.'
