Heritage secretary Virginia Bottomley criticised local authority double standards over tourism at a Conservative heritage conference in York at the weekend, reports the Yorkshire Post (p6).

'If you want tourism to create jobs you must give the industry the importance it deserves,' she reportedly said.

'It's a source of great frustration when you have a local authority which says they believe in tourism and yet, in every single way, they act very differently.'
