Responding to environment minister Elliot Morley's speech* at the

Chartered Institute of Waste Management's annual conference today,

Friends of the Earth commented on the urgent need for the

government to tackle the UK's mounting waste crisis as follows:

'When will the government take effective action to tackle the UK's

growing waste crisis? It is allowing the amount of waste created to

increase every year, and failing to ensure that enough is recycled or

re-used. Ministers must get to the core of the problem and force

manufacturers and retailers to make products in a way that does not

waste precious resources and that can be easily recycled or re-used.

The planet is not big enough to allow our throwaway society to

continue'.
