In response to today's reportby the comptroller and auditor general on the 2001 Outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease, DEFRA secretary of

state Margaret Beckett said:

'I thank the NAO for this very thorough report. The government agrees

with its analysis that, while many things were done right, there are

also lessons to be learned.

'The report describes accurately the unprecedented nature of the

outbreak, the very wide spread of the disease before its presence was

detected, and the department's success in limiting further spread to

new areas once controls were in place.'
