Conservative MP Teresa Gorman has accepted substantial undisclosed libel damages over an article in the Daily Mirror in January 1994 which claimed she made almost £1m profit from a `scandalous sell-off' of council houses to top Tories by Westminster City Council, The Guardian reported (18 March, p11).

Mr Justice Morison heard that the story, which according to The Guardian, alleged she took improper advantage of her public position to persuade the council to sell her the freehold of houses within weeks of her election, was highly damaging to Ms Gorman's professional and personal reputation.

The Gormans had bought one house in Lord North Street, Westminster, from a private individual at full market value 20 years ago, solicitor Charlotte Watson said.
