Election officials are investigating the loss of 60 ballot papers in Northumberland, reports the Newcastle Journal (p2).

The votes were found to be missing when vote counting after the county council election was taking place in Berwick on Friday.

The mix-up could have happened during the verification process at Alnwick, according to some comments. The Wooler seat was taken by Conservative Sarah Davidson with a majority of 83.

Alnwick returning officer Lawrie St Ruth said there was often a small discrepancy but it should not be speculated on until the confusion was investigated.
