Burnley BC has been given a mixed report by the Improvement & Development Agency's peer review programme.

The report, part of a rolling programme of council inspections by the IDeA, said Burnley was a 'positive authority doing well in difficult circumstances'.

It said the council's reaction to the race riots in June last year 'must be commended' and praised the commitment of its staff.

However, the inspectors said that several improvements needed to be made in key areas, particularly leadership, community engagement and communication following their visit in September.

Burnley's chief executive Gillian Taylor said: 'We are determined to rise to these challenges. We asked for this review because we want to get better.'
