The casino towns initiative from the home office has been rejected by Croydon and Peterborough, The Daily Telegraph reports (p1).

The government is further consulting Croydon, who did not want to be on the list of 'casino towns' announced yesterday. Peterborough was removed.

Croydon's stance is backed by both local churches and councillors following a free vote. They feel it would have a harmful social impact.

The stance is in contrast to the welcome given by other towns selected. Phil Willis Liberal Democrat leader of Harrogate Council, said he was 'delighted' that the town had been chosen.
