Birmingham city council saw city centre air pollution increase 50 per cent last year, reports The Birmingham Post (p4).

Last year saw 36 days where levels of 'diesel dust' particulates were above safe levels, an increase of 12 on the previous year.

Gavin Tringham, head of the council's environmental protection unit, said the increase was partially caused by an increase in the type of weather conditions which hold the particles in the air.
