One in four people living in rural England is close to poverty, according to a report in The Guardian Society section (p7).

Lobby group Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) claims rural areas are not getting the same attention as urban areas, and has urged the major parties to endorse community-based development. It also wants a European Rural Fund to be established.

ACRE cites figures from the DoE which show that National Parks were funded six times the amount of local rural voluntary action in the last financial year, and Urban Development Commission projects got£346m compared to£20m to the Rural Development Commission.
