Nineteen new nursery schools and nursery units were built in the 1993-94 financial year, at a cost to governors of £1.2m, according to minister for schools Robin Squire (WA, 15 July, col777).

This is up from 13 new units and schools for 1992-93, at a cost of nearly £1.1m.

Nursery education does not represent a separate category in the distribution of annual capital guidelines to local education authorities. Authorities' plans for spending on nursery classes and schools are taken into account in the formula calculation of the ACG category covering improvement and replacement.

Capital spending at all county and controlled schools is entirely the responsibility of LEAs, according to Mr Squire.
