The Scotsman (p9) reports on a campaign being mounted to press the Scottish office for more money for the Highlands and Islands area fire brigade.

Highland council convenor Peter Peacock told the paper that the council currently funded the fire service well beyond the level of government grant, which means having to switch funds from other vital services.

He said: 'At present we are robbing Peter to pay Paul. this is not a fair and proper way to do business.

'We need to look beyond seeking additional funding for the fire service. We need more government flexibility to run all our services to average levels already enjoyed in the rest of Scotland.'
