The mother of a persistant truant yesterday became the first parent to be the subject of a parenting order, reports The Daily Mail (p1).

Lena Summers will have to attend lessons on how to become a better parent. She appeared before magistrates after he 14-year-old son, David, missed 217 days out of 256 days at school.

She will be required to attend a three-month course of lessons to teach her how to curb her son's behaviour. Both of them could now receive counselling sessions with police, social workers, education services and probation officers.
