Planners have started identifying possible sites for what they hope will be Britain's first car-free housing estate in Edinburgh, according to Radio 5 Live's Dirty News programme.

Residents would pledge not to own a motor car.

Europe's first car-free housing scheme is under construction in Bremen, Germany. For long journeys residents will have access to a car pool but locally they will travel by bicycle or public transport.

Plans for a similar scheme in Cambridge have already been rejected.

Lothian RC deputy transport director Andrew Holmes said there were practical reasons why car-free housing was inevitable. Already during the night in some areas every inch of kerb space was occupied by a vehicle.

'As car ownership continues to increase, this problem will intensify. I think in some areas it is going to be physicallu impossible to own a car and park it in the same street or even the same area,' said Mr Holmes.
