A Kent MP is accusing the county council of financial mismanagement, reports BBC Kent.

The accusation from Jacques Arnold, Conservative MP for Gravesham, comes as Kent CC prepares to make cuts to services in a bid to save£79 million in the forthcoming financial year. It says old people's homes and fire stations may go, along with thousands of jobs.

Mr Arnold says this is a result of incompetence and is calling for a Commons debate on the matter.

But Kent Labour Group spokesman Derek Etherton denies the authority is guilty of mismanagement. He says the cuts are the results of three years of accumulation of cuts in government grant.

That reduction, he claimed, is because the authority is not run by Conservatives, adding that the authorities which did best from the grant settlement were Westminster and Wandsworth LBCs.

Mr Etherton said Kent's Labour administration had taken£123 million out of administration costs over the last three years.
