In a letter to the Scotsman (p18) Liberal Democrat MP for Edinburgh West Donald Gorrie welcomed news that the McIntosh Commission will recommend most council employees be allowed to seek election to the council they work for.

He says the present restrictions hit rural and island areas particularly hard, preventing thousands of teachers and other council employees from contributing to their communities as councillors.

Along with proportional representation for council elections, removing this ban would greatly improve the overall quality of counicllors, he said.
