A Tory MP is to make a last-ditch attempt to stop the closure of Ipswich Airport, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p17).

Central Suffolk MP Michael Lord is asking the department of environment to call in Ipswich BC's plans to redevelop the airport for housing, education and leisure activities.

The borough has decided to close the airport by 31 December, despite, the MP claims, majority opinion in the town appearing to want to keep it open. A recent 10,000-signature petition backed retention of the airport.

'The closure will have serious long-term implications both for the future of the town and transport and business in East Anglia,' Mr Lord said.
