The Western Mail (p3) reports that in a letter to deputy prime minister John Prescott, Llanelli MP Denzil Davies has expressed his concern that bus services are being drastically curtailed and supplies the reasons why the situation is moving in the opposite direction to that which the government intended.

These include the reduction of bus subsidies following local government reorganisation in Wales, rundown public transport infrastructure and inadequate and poorly maintained shelters. There is also a problem in getting agreement between authorities where bus services cross council boundaries - in some cases services have been withdrawn.

He is quoted: 'In addition, many authorities no longer have the expertise or political will to deal with transportation issues effectively. And many of the problems in large urban areas are affected by journey-to-work patterns which cover more than one unitary authority. There is, as a consequence, no regular monitoring of key indicators or targets set for improving air quality or reducing congestion.'
