Only hours before Bromsgrove Conservative constituency party was due to discuss Tory MP Roy Thomason's future, he announced last night he would not fight the next general election, reports The Birmingham Post (p1).

'I am conscious that the association is divided over my candidacy to serve as the member of parliament,' he said. 'Even though my financial position has been satisfactorily settled on a commercial basis I must accept responsibility for the difficulties that have arisen.'

The former leader of the Association of District Councils said he will continue as an MP until the next general election is called.
