Newbury MP David Rendell is to question transport secretary Brian Mawhinney about a plan to build a multi-billion pound international airport in south west Oxfordshire, reports BBC Oxford.

News of the proposed development was revealed just before Christmas by The Times newspaper, causing alarm among planning officers and district and county councillors, none of whom knew anything of the scheme.

Although no planning application has been submitted, international engineering consultants Ove Aarup last week confirmed it was commissioned to undertake a feasibility study on the suitability of the site and assess what roads links would be required.

It said this was part of a study of air transport requirements in the south east of England.

Mr Rendell will ask Dr Mawhinney about the status of the proposal for an airport on land between Abingdon and Wantage.
