Tory MPs last night rallied to the side of Party Chairman Jeremy Hanley over his insistence that Labour councils are riddled with corruption, reports The Times (p9).

Several MPs tabled Commons motions calling on Tony Blair to conduct public inquiries into alleged malpractices in town halls,

Mr Hanley said yesterday that the evidence against Labour was growing by the day. He said Labour members were engaged in civil war, membership irregularities and even infiltration by gangsters, reports The Times.

Police investigations were underway in Paisley, Liverpool, Manchester, Tameside, and North Tyneside he said.
