MPs back protest over PO closures

  • Comment
The Post Office should not close branches that serve as a village’s only shop, or shut profitable outlets, a parliamentary report has said.

MPs said closing profitable branches would disadvantage many people, while community interest demanded lone village shops should stay.

The probe by the Commons business, enterprise & regulatory reform committee also attacked the Post Office for its opaque finances.

This echoed councils’ complaints that they have been unable to get vital data about the viability of branches that could be saved by local government intervention (LGC, 27 March).

Councils have warned that closures will worsen social exclusion and many, including Essex CC, are looking to either subsidise services or provide them themselves, possibly in local one-stop shops.
