The Commons environment committee has recommended that the law on collection of council business rates be changed to stop companies from going into liquidation to avoid paying, the FT reports (p6).

A report from the Committee highlights difficulties in collection since 1988, when the government removed local authorities status as preferred creditors.

The Committee also said that if ministers override a large number of the Local Government Commission's recommendations, it would be tantamount to a declaration that the Commission had failed, the paper reports.
