MPs are to probe the role of local government in community cohesion in the wake of the 2001 riots in Oldham, Burnley and Bradford.

The Commons housing, planning, local government and the regions committee will look at how other public agencies such as voluntary and community groups can help.

And the MPs will investigate the response of the government, particularly the ODPM, to the series of reports into community cohesion produced after the riots, especially in relation to local government, housing and neighbourhood

renewal.

Witnesses are invited to submit memorandums to the committee by 30 June, and the MPs will make a three-day visit to Oldham in September.
