Councillors have cancelled the Chelmsford Spectacular this year after deciding it was too big a financial risk for the council, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p1).

Going ahead with the outdoor music extravaganza could cost the council up to £70,000 if it goes wrong, despite having made a profit of almost £30,000 last year.

Chelmsford BC's policy and resources committee decided 'with great reluctance' to cancel the event. Council chairman Ken Weldon said a number of smaller events would be staged during the summer, the paper adds.
