The Brussels-based Conference and Association of Steel Territories (Caster) wants North Lanarkshire Council to handle its budget, reported The Herald (6 July, p6).

It is believed the council may take up the offer once the controversy about the£4.8m missing from its own budget dies down.

Depute council leader Jim McCabe said: 'The European Organisation wants us to become the treasurers. It is a bit ironic given the situation. We have not yet given a decision because of the current difficulties. A decision will be made but I cannot say when.'

The Euro committee was set up to give aid to areas across the continent affected by steel closures. Caster's administration budget is in thousands rather than millions because aid payouts are made directly from the EC on Caster's recommendation.
