North Somerset Council has awarded services provider Liberata a£23m contract to manage the administration of revenues, benefits & associated support services for the next seven years. Liberata Local Government won the contract in competition with Capita & W S Atkins.

The contract includes the administration of housing benefits, council tax, national non-domestic rates, overpayment recovery, cashiers, customer services and full supporting IT services.

Jonathan Thompson, North Somerset Council's head of corporate finance said: 'Over the last year or so we have seen the improvements in service delivery which Liberata has brought. This has included the introduction of the e-benefits form and other initiatives which fit in well to our e-government strategy'.

Glenn Timms, chief executive officer of Liberata plc, said:

'In partnership with North Somerset Council we are leading the way with the use of our online benefit form, an automated telephone payment system and the acceptance of debit cards for council payments.'

* Liberata (then known as CSL) was previously awarded its contract with North Somerset council in May 1995.
