The Yorkshire Post (p6) reports that Sheffield Education Authority is closing a school included on the 'name and shame' hit list drawn up by the government last year in December 1998 and reopening it with a new name two weeks later in January 1999. Although education chiefs say that since it was singled out, Earl Marshal secondary school has made satisfactory progress towards improving standards, parents are still choosing to send their children to other city schools. A new name and a possible new staff and head teacher may restore parents' confidence in the school, the council hopes.
