The Natural Law Party's candidate for Orkney and Shetland is trying to get 32,000 ballot papers reprinted describing her as standing for the Artist and Teacher Party.

The Scotsman (p8) reports that Christian Wharton filled in the nomination form wrongly, because she did not realise she had to put the name of her party under the heading 'description'.

Ms Wharton, from Skelmersdale, Lancashire, said: 'I'm terribly upset ... I'm so committed to the Natural Law party and I've canvassed very hard all over the islands.'

The deputy returning officer, Alistair Buchan, said once the nomination form is lodged, it has to go through as it is. 'I'm very sympathetic to Ms Wharton, but electoral law is very strict,' he told the Scotsman.
