Over 5,700 equivalent full-time staff are directly employed by Welsh local authority social services departments to provide day and domiciliary care (WA, 13 July, col626).

The September 1992 figure of 5,752.3 quoted by Welsh junior minister Gwilym Jones excludes local authority staff employed in the areas of care assessment, social work support and management. It also excludes staff of other contracted agencies.

The corresponding figure for Clwyd is 544.7.
