Neath Port Talbot CBC has appointed Steve Phillips, currently corporate director at Cardiff City Council, as its new chief executive.

Mr Phillips will in three months’ time take over from Ken Sawyers who is retiring after 47 years’ service in local government.

The new chief said he was honoured to accept the position.

“Neath Port Talbot is a high performing council which has a solid reputation across Wales for good governance and it is my intention to enhance this reputation and build on this success,” he said.

“I fully appreciate the challenges that local authorities need to face over the coming years and I look forward to working with elected members, partners and colleagues.”

Council leader Ali Thomas (Lab) added: “There is no doubt that there are some tough times ahead in local government. We have a duty not only to weather the storms but to identify the many opportunities that become apparent.”

He said of Mr Phillips: “I am confident he is the man with the vision to lead the way and keep Neath Port Talbot at the forefront of good local government in Wales.”
