The County Councils Network, the special interest group for counties within the Local Government Association, has created a new£70,000 director post.

Part-time network secretary Stephen Campbell will step down at the end of May, and will be replaced by a full-time director.

Mr Campbell said the network had achieved many of its aims and it was felt it should have a full-time lead officer to reflect its increased profile.

Speculation has been mounting about the future of two-tier local government under government plans to establish regional assemblies.

If the existence of county councils is threatened under proposals, the network will take the lead in lobbying to retain them, he said.
