All 37 Welsh districts are being invited to join a powerful new body covering local government in England and Wales.

Under the proposals, Welsh local government will have complete freedom to develop its own association with its own constitution, internal management structure, staff and policies.

'All the major political parties in England and Wales are behind this move' said Harry Jones, Labour leader of the council of Welsh Districts. 'This will give us recognition as a nation, as of right.'

He added the first transitional meeting in Wales had supported the move.

Lending support to the new association from the national ADC, vice chairman Elgar Jenkins said local government must have a powerful voice in the life of the country and Wales by joining the new association would have a full role to play in national life.
