The new body set up to monitor standards at Birmingham City Council is to investigate 26 allegations of sleaze involving Labour councillors, reports the Birmingham Post (p3).

The six-member committee will have the power to remove councillors from chairmanships, vice-chairmanships and outside bodies and to deny them use of council facilities.

Serious or technical complaints will either be referred to the local government ombudsman, the district auditor or the police.

Two independent members are due to be appointed to the committee in November. They will join two Labour councillors, one Tory and one Liberal Democrat.

Council leader Theresa Stewart said she expected the committee to have resolved some of the allegations before the local elections in May next year.
